You know, it’s not like I’m some modern punk, dickhead! It’s obviously a 1977 original punk rock look, but I guess Johnny Fuckface over there is too stupid to realize it!
– Enid Coleslaw (Ghost World)
Ghost World is probably my favorite comic book (besides Tintin) and also one of my favorite movies.
Enid Coleslaw is the main character and creator Daniel Clowes manages to hilariously and accurately portray the internal struggles of a teenage girl who is simply trying to find her place in the world but yet not wanting to belong to it. Along with that is the cynicism, bitterness and bad attitude. Something that my 16 year old self could relate all too well to, did I mention I have the word ‘Bitter’ tattooed on the inside of my lip? I tend to forget it’s there until I’m at the dentist and they ask if it says ‘Brad Pitt’ … I guess it has faded a lot over the past 15 years.
Teenage-angst aside; what I love about Enid is that she’s highly influential. She appreciates the more unusual things in life, from her quirky style to her clever and witty sense of humor. She’s not afraid of being strange and in my opinion, exudes total coolness because she likes what she likes. In the book/film, not everybody “gets her” but I certainly do and if she were a real person I’d want to be her friend. I can almost guarantee she’d be doing something interesting with her life.
